FREE Shopping Money!

HOT COLORADO TIP - $10 MALL GIFT CERTIFICATE FREE
Am I dreaming? This seems too good to be true, but I pinched myself and think it is! General Growth Properties has teamed up with TLC's "What Not to Wear" to offer free $10 gift cards. Supplies are of course limited and Park Meadows is already out, but Southwest Plaza (Littleton) still has about 400 cards, Foothills Mall (Ft. Collins) has about 300 and Chapel Hills (C. Springs) has about 50. Providing you the links to this offer is a bit tricky for various reasons, but try here (it may default to Chapel Hills Mall as it is the last site I visited). If that doesn't work, Google the desired mall name, go to their Web site and look for a TLC ad/link. This should be at the bottom right of the mall's page. Then follow the links to get to the offer. There are actually two offers: one for a FREE $10 card (limited) and one for a $10 card after you spend $75 at the mall. Finding the coupon may sound hard, but I promise it isn't. And isn't it worth a few clicks to get free shopping money?!
Did you get a free $10 gift card? Please leave a comment and let me know!

What to Do this Weekend in Colorado

WHAT TO TO THIS WEEKEND IN COLORADO
This weekend I am in Allenspark, Colorado celebrating my niece and sister's birthdays. If you want a nice mountain getaway without all the commercialism and I-70, I recommend Allenspark. If you want more of a town, Estes Park is another great option in the area. Lyons makes a nice day trip. Walk mainstreet, sample some cherry cider, then visit the antique stores and restaurants. I'm blogging from Allenspark's Tapestry of Life Coffee House and do suggest you stop in if you are in Allenspark or driving down the Peak to Peak Highway (Highway 7). Great coffee, awesome looking homemade pies, plus wine and beer too. Of course the best part is the mountain views and peaceful setting.

Ryan, Nicole and Others Drink for Free at the Front Porch

COLORADO TIPS ON DENVER HAPPY HOURS
"Kelly, Kelly, Kelly, Kelly, Kelly..." Does it date me to admit this song is running through my head as I write the post? Make me odd for remembering it? In any case, the last few days of this month your name might bring you something better than the sweet, but oh-so-simple song Woody composed for his wife Kelly on the show Cheers. Your name could be your ticket to FREE drinks!
On every night but Wednesdays, The Front Porch on 15th in between Lawrence and Larimer streets downtown offers FREE drinks all night to people with specific names. Name not on the list? Don't despair. The Front Porch offers a great happy hour of $3.50 you-call-its from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30. Or, tonight (and all Wednesdays) are flip nights -- order a drink, flip a coin and guess correctly, the drink is FREE. Sundays you ca get in on a Wii bowling tournament and win a $30 bar tab.
Now for the roll call (starting tomorrow):
  • 8/27 - Ryan, Somara & Nicole
  • 8/28 - Laura
  • 8/29 - Tiffany
  • 8/30 - Stephanie & Jack
  • 8/31 - Casey, Chris & Dustin
Have you been to The Front Porch? Please leave a comment to let me know what you thought of the place.

Sunday Savings (on Monday)

COLORADO SHOPPING DEALS
I am slacking once again and am not home to review my paper and tell you about the deals. Thankfully, you can always count on The Freebie Blogger and My City Mommy. Deals this week are at Walgreens, Rite Aid and Office Depot. As always, check the local ad (you can view it online) before heading out for a specific deal as there can be regional differences. Also, on hot rebate deals (Office Depot free scientific calculator), you may want to call your local store to make sure they still have the item. My City Mommy also reports on the coupons that were in the Sunday paper. Another great spot for coupons is Coupons.com.

I also can't share my freebies photo this week as I lost my camera somewhere on the way to North Carolina. I did need a better camera for my blog anyway so, does anyone know any great deals on a good digital camera?

For now, I am off to the beach at Nags Head with the local restaurant/tourist attraction coupon book in hand :)
Did you get any great deals this week? Please leave a comment and let me know.

What to Do this Weekend in Colorado

COLORADO TIPS FOR THE WEEKEND
There are a ton of things to do this weekend. It actually makes me a bit sad I'm vacationing in North Carolina and can't make any of them. In any case, summer is winding down so get out there and do something fun!

What to Do in Denver
It's the first year for the Cherry Creek North Food & Wine event so go out and support them. FREE stuff includes daily culinary demonstrations and the things you do have to pay for support a nonprofit dedicated to make arts experiences accessible in Colorado. Eat, drink and be cherry!

What to Do Around Colorado
Another first is the BoulderFest featuring artists like Rebecca Folsom, the Big BanG Band and the Nacho Men. Breweries, wineries and local eateries will also be providing sampling opportunities.

If you want to head to Colorado Wine Country based on my earlier glowing recommendation (and still more posts to come on the subject), check out the Mesa Verde Food, Wine & Arts Festival in Cortez. You won't be disappointed, especially if you visit some of the local wineries in addition to the festival.

What to Do in Colorado with Kids
I usually try to suggest a kids option in the Denver area knowing the little ones aren't always great road warriors, but this weekend I really think the thing to do is the Estes Park Heritage Festival. The drive really isn't bad, it gets you to the mountains and the festival is a wonderful opportunity for the kids to experience pioneer life. Activities include wagon and Stanley Steamer rides, and live demonstrations of log home building, quilting, wood carving and more.
Colorado Springs military families, don't forget free Qdoba kids meals today (Saturday).

Evening at Lakeside "Amuses" Family

COLORADO TIPS: VISIT LAKESIDE BEFORE SUMMER'S END
Before we took off for Colorado Wine Country, we joined my sister and her five- and seven-year-old sons for an evening at Lakeside. Although I've lived very close to this amusement park for the past five years, I have not been there in the past 20. Big mistake!

Lakeside has charm that new theme parks just can't match. Plus, the lines are relatively short and prices are affordable. With coupons, our party of five enjoyed unlimited rides for under $38. We topped off the evening with soft-serve twist ice cream cones for $1.50 each. You get the sincere feeling Lakeside aims to please, not gouge.

Rides range from the mild (Ferris wheel and scenic train ride around the lake) to the wild -- a 140 foot drop tower. We tried to focus on the sunset view on our ride up the tower to calm our fears, but I was still wishing I had never locked myself into that chair as we approached the top and subsequent drop! When we were back on solid ground I was glad I had experienced the ride, but once was definitely enough.

Lakeside has limited hours now through Sept. 19. It is mostly open weekends from noon until 11 pm. Unlimited rides are $19.75 per person, but there are buy one, get one free coupons in the Entertainment book. Or, you can print this coupon and get unlimited rides for two people for $29.50. This is a fair price for a day of fun that also supports a family-run labor of love and a Denver landmark.

Have you been to Lakeside lately? Please make a comment under this post and let me know about your experience.

Colorado Wine Country Delights

THINGS TO DO IN COLORADO colorado tips
My husband and I took off for the Western Slope last Thursday for the Palisade Peach Festival. Our plan was to visit a few local wineries as something else to do while there. As it turned out, the Colorado Wine Country was the highlight of our five-day trip, with less than two hours of our time being spent at the Palisade Peach Festival.

We had such a great time visiting the wineries in Palisade that we continued on to the wineries in Grand Junction, Cedaredge and Paonia. I will make a separate post about each area's winery, as one post is simply not enough!

The bottom line is, if you have not been to Colorado Wine Country, plan to go as soon as you can. You’ll have a great time while supporting wonderful “mom and pop” vintners and contributing to the state’s economy.

The Sept. 17-20 Colorado Mountain Wine Fest might be the perfect time to visit. If you are interested, look into lodging as soon as possible. Palisade is probably sold out, but I am sure you can find rooms in Grand Junction (about 10 miles away). If you’re planning a trip later in the fall, be sure to check with some wineries first to make sure they are open. I got the feeling some operate seasonally only. No matter when you go, bring a cooler so you can stock up on exceptional yet affordable wine. We didn’t have a cooler and didn’t want our wine to spoil in the car so we couldn’t buy much. So, now we have to go back to Colorado Wine Country soon – not that we’re complaining!

Sunday Savings

COLORADO DEALS AND STEALS colorado tips
I’m out touring the state, so I don’t have my Sunday paper and its coupons/deals to share with you. But, you can check out The Freebie Blogger for Kmart, Rite Aid and Walgreens deals. At a quick glance, it looks like Kmart has the best deals, but I guess it depends on what is on your shopping list. Do note that the Freebie Blogger is not out of Colorado so there may be a few instances when there are regional differences (check a local ad either from the paper or online before heading out for a specific item), but for the most part the sales will be the same. Also, the Freebie Blogger uses abbreviations to point you to coupons you may have clipped in previous weeks’ papers. For example, RP = the Red Plum insert. This is a very cool feature to make sure you get the very best deals – sometimes making money on your purchases – but it only works if you are a faithful couponer.
Which brings me to another “tip.” I do recommend you clip all coupons. Although you might have a favorite brand, that brand’s competitor may have a hot deal next week, allowing you to try it for free or better. My other reason for clipping everything is to donate products to the many wonderful organizations in our state committed to helping others. Say a coupon can get you a free (or better) shampoo, bag of pet food, or school supplies. There is definitely a battered women’s home, animal shelter or public school/nonprofit for kids (Tennyson Center, Boys and Girls Club, etc.) that could put that free item to good use.
Once again, this post photo shows my free or nearly free stuff for the week. And, this was a short week. We left town Thursday, so I probably have more freebies sitting in my mailbox at home. My splurges this week were $.99 for the lotion at Walgreens and $.06 for the six notebooks from Staples. Other than that, everything else was my favorite price – FREE!
Did you find any hot deals in the paper? Please share with a comment since I am vactioning!

Colorado Weekend Happenings

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEKEND IN THE DENVER
I love mac and cheese, the Gabby Gourmet and have a friend who loves Steve's Snappin Dogs (I haven't been yet), so I'm going to recommend that you check out the Mac & Cheese Challenge on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Steve's Snappin Dogs, 3525 E. Colfax. Nine restaurants are competing, Gabby is hosting and "celebrity" judges will pick the winner. colorado tips

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEKEND WITH KIDS
FREE festivals are a great way to get out of the house. On Saturday, consider the Westminster Faire from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be crafts, entertainment, food, vendors and more. Or, head to Littleton's Western Welcome Week. Activities are too many to name, but include an Olde Town Market, a Scottish Festival (a festival in a festival!), gold panning and a children's fishing derby.

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEKEND IN COLORADO
Visit a national park -- it's FREE! Read more here.

Residence Inn Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION LODGING DEALS
After one bad lodging experience in France through Priceline (actually, its European affiliate booking.com), I swore I wouldn't use the site again. Still, I know our Paris mishap was half our fault because we were in a hurry. So, I tried the Name Your Own Price feature for our Grand Junction stay and we ended up in the three-star Residence Inn by Marriott for $60.
Jamie checked us in and was delightful, promptly offering a Palisade Peach Festival brochure after learning this is why we are in town.
Residence Inns offer more than just a bed and bathroom. It's a studio apartment, complete with a kitchen, microwave and dishes -- not to mention a complimentary bag of popcorn.
Despite one bad experience, Priceline (especially the Name Your Own Price feature) can offer great deals. When it comes to Name Your Own Price, I've learned some tricks so feel free to email me (click on the About Me photo on the sidebar, then look for my email to the right) if you want to know more. We're definitely happy with our $60 Grand Junction room that usually runs $130!

Dinner at the Grand Junction Ale House

GRAND JUNCTION DINING
We hit the Ale House for dinner after our drive to Grand Junction. Just what the doctor ordered. My husband had a Southwestern Salad and I opted for the chicken potpie with salad -- half guilty pleasure, half healthy. The best part was affordable drinks. We enjoyed a $14 bottle of wine and took the rest back to the hotel with us. Yes, this is legal.
Another great bonus is the Ale House's expansive outside dining. Tonight there was live music on the patio.
Although this is a semi-chain (it is affiliated with Breckenridge Brewery), I definitely recommend it as a place to eat when visiting Grand Junction.

National Parks in Colorado Free This Weekend

COLORADO NATIONAL PARKS DEALS
Whether you want to dig for dinosaur fossils or climb the Great Sand Dunes, you can do it this weekend for FREE thanks to the National Park Service. The organization is hosting a fee-free weekend Aug. 15-16. Be sure to visit the the NPS website for park locations -- these are different than Colorado State Parks, which had a free day earlier this month.

It's a haul, but if you can swing it, I recommend Dinosaur National Monument. I went last year while on a road trip to Utah. We arrived near closing so we didn't have time to do all Dinosaur has to offer and we couldn't go in the visitor center/museum as it was under renovation, but even still we had a wonderful time. The petroglyphs were amazing to see and we really enjoyed walking around the Josie Bassett Morris homestead. It's astonishing how small this home is, but yet all that Josie needed. It definitely gives you perspective and a look into a very different way of living.

I'd also like to go to Mesa Verde -- and save the $15 summer entrance fee -- but think we're headed to the Grand Junction area for the Palisade Peach Festival (and of course some wine tasting). So, we'll probably stop in at Colorado National Monument. I really don't know anything about this park. I think that is exactly the reason to go! Rumor is that the Barack Obama will be there to celebrate fee-free weekend. Regardless of one's political leanings, I always think that if you have a chance to see, and possibly meet, the president of the United States, you should take advantage of the opportunity.
Do you have a recommendation for a National Park to visit in Colorado? Please use the comment feature to let me know.

Casa Bonita Delights Once Again

DENVER DINING
Coloradoans have a love/hate relationship with Casa Bonita. As for my family, we're planted firmly in the love camp. We never miss an opportunity to celebrate some occasion at this truly unique place. This week, we brought a first-time Colorado visitor. Now that I write this, I realize I never asked her what she thought of the place ... I was too busy enjoying myself! Maybe she will comment and let us know, but as a family friend I bet she'll be nice and say she loved it to. Regardless of what you have heard -- good, bad or neutral -- you really must go to Casa Bonita at least once.

Casa Bonita nay-sayers complain about the food, don't like the cafeteria-style line that is often up to an hour long, and perhaps think the whole place is rather cheesy. Yet for me it is all part of the experience. Yes, it is not five-star dining when you have to carry your own tray or when a staffer is running around in a gorilla costume. But where else can you go and watch cliff diving while you eat?

As for the food, I must say that I really did enjoy my chicken enchiladas. It seemed to me to be a "new and improved" recipe. But you don't go to Casa Bonita for the food. Did I mention cliff diving? If that doesn't get you, how about all-you-can-eat sopaipillas?

There are also many activities for the young or young at heart. Visit the arcade and go for a high score in skee-ball, sit down for the puppet show or watch the little ones scramble about on the floor after the pinata is cracked open. And of course, Black Bart's hideout is not to be missed.

After spending nearly three hours at Casa Bonita, it was time to go. As we did, my seven-year-old nephew commented, "I hope this place never goes out of business." Me too.

Have you been to Casa Bonita? Please comment to let me know if you are pro Casa Bonita or anti Casa Bonita and why.

Colorado Weekend Happenings

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEKEND IN DENVER
Old South Pearl Street is presenting BrewGrass, a mix of bluegrass music and local brews, Saturday from noon until 10 p.m. Admission is $5, children under 13 FREE with an adult. Visit the website for specific performers and attending breweries.

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEKEND IN DENVER FOR KIDS
Abracadabra! Visit the Central (downtown) branch of the Denver Public Library Saturday from 2-3 p.m. for Magic Mania: A Family Magic Show with Magic Rob. Admission is FREE.

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEKEND IN COLORADO
Leadville is a quaint old mining town not often enough visited by Colorado tourists. If you haven't been there, or can't remember when you were there last, go this weekend for Boom Days. The festival includes various mining demonstrations and a street fair with food, shopping and other entertainment. While the whole weekend sounds fun, I recommend going on Sunday to see the "world famous" International Pack Burro Race come through town. I have no idea what a pack burro race looks like, but I did see a cattle drive through downtown Steamboat Springs over Fourth of July weekend and if the Pack Burro Race is anywhere near as funny as that, you won't want to miss it. Other Pack Burro Race festivities include a celebrity (do you think it will be a Hollywood A-lister?) burro race and a costume "Mosey" contest.

Will you or did you attend any of these events? Please leave a comment and let me know.

Mishawaka Rocks!

COLORADO OUTDOOR MUSIC VENUES
I am two parts thrilled and one part devastated that my husband and I stumbled across the Mishawaka Amphitheater while taking a detour home from Steamboat Springs to avoid I-70 traffic. Thrilled because it is probably one of the coolest places in all of Colorado, and this is coming from someone who is really not all that in to concerts. Devastated because the day we found it, July 5, The Indigo Girls, my absolute favorite band, were playing later that evening to an of course already sold-out crowd.
But even though I couldn't get a ticket to the show, we were able to enjoy a nice lunch at the Mishawaka Inn and watch as the crew set up for the show. And, I did see Amy's and Emily's guitars (yep, that's them in the photo) and their tour bus.
I'm not sure that Mishawaka can be described. I think it must be experienced. Still, I'll say it has a fun backyard BBQ feel in a "backyard" on the Poudre River where cool bands play. I'm sure it is Mishawaka's uniqueness that brings the Indigo Girls there as they could certainly fill larger venues.
Check the website for upcoming shows to make sure you don't miss one of your favorite artists play at this spectacular spot.
Been to Mishawaka? Please leave a comment and let me know what you thought!

Shop 'Til You Drop and Save

Colorado Deals and coupons

Attention coupon clippers and deal seekers! This is a great week for saving. There are five coupon inserts in today’s Denver Post. Combine the coupons with retailer sales and you can take home some great deals including:

  • King Soopers – Buy four P&G products, save $4 with you Sooper Card. Add coupons from the P&G Brand Saver insert in the paper, plus double coupons up to $1 for the following final sale prices of: $3.88 Tide ($1 coupon); $.99 Pringles Stix ($.50 coupon doubled); $3.49 Venus Razor ($2 coupon); $.99 Always ($.50 coupon doubled).
  • Safeway – Safeway has joined King Soopers in offering double coupons. Couple their weekly circular coupons with the other coupon inserts to snag: $1.49 Crest Prop-Health ($2.49 Safeway coupon + $.75 manufacturer coupon doubled to $1 limit); $2.30, or .$.57 each, Chef Boyardee canned pasted if you buy four (4 for $3 Safeway coupon + .35 manufacturer coupon doubled to $.70); $2.99 Listerine ($3.99 Safeway coupon + .50 manufacturer coupon doubled to $1); and $4.99 six-bar Dove soap ($5.99 Safeway coupon + $1 manufacturer coupon). But the best deals are $.99 Quaker Chewy Granola Bars and buy two Pepsi 12-packs, get three more Pepsi 12-packs FREE, plus a free bag of Tostitos. Too bad I’m a Coke products drinker!
  • Sunflower Markets – This is the place for produce and meat products! From the Wednesday ad good through Aug. 5: $.49 lb. peaches and $1.97 lb. family pack boneless skinless chicken breast. This fresh chicken breast on sale typically beats the frozen chicken breast price at other stores by $1 or so.

With coupons, I typically save 40% or more off my grocery bill. But remember, sometimes a coupon is not the best deal. Store brands frequently beat coupon prices on the brand names if they are not on sale.

A few other deals:

  • Ulta is my favorite beauty store. There’s a $3.50 off $10 coupon in the paper. Match that to Ulta sales and manufacturer coupons and you can stock your makeup bag for less. For example, say you buy two $2.99 Covergirl products at buy one get one half off, then add the manufacturer coupon of $2.50 off two, your price for both is $1.98. Add two $6.99 L’Oreal lip cosmetics, also on sale for at buy one get one half off, plus a $1 off two manufacturer coupon and your price comes to $9.84. Then throw in your Ulta $3.50 off coupon and the final sale price for all four cosmetics totals $7.96.
  • The Denver Post is offering subscribers a new “Perks” program. Check out the A&E section. The best deal I see so far is .$08 prints at Mike’s Camera. This beats the $.10 I usually spend after accumulating enough points for the discount on my Sooper Card.
  • Head today or tomorrow to one of 13 Colorado Texas Roadhouse restaurants and get a FREE Baby Blossom Appetizer. It doesn’t look like any purchase is required. You must print the coupon from your computer. Special thanks to Free Sample Freak for the heads-up on this freebie and for pointing out the five coupon inserts in this week’s Sunday newspaper. This is one of my favorite sites for free samples and savings.

Which of the deals are you most interested in? Please use the comments feature to let me know.

Lunch at McClellan's Grill & Brewing Co. in Canon City

WHERE TO EAT - CANON CITY, CO
Stopped at McClellan’s Grill & Brewing Co. in Canon City for lunch. I had macaroni and cheese, one of the specials for the day, and my husband had Shepard’s Pie. Both were delicious. Since we were just passing through we didn’t have beers, but it looked like they had a nice selection.
What is your favorite restaurant for comfort food? Favorite brew pub restaurant? Please use the comments feature to let me know.
